Alberto Aquilani may play in MLS
There have been intense rumours linking former Liverpool midfielder Alberto Aquilani with a move to play in the MLS.
The North American football league has been getting a number of high profile players in the last few months. The arrival of names like Kaka, Steven Gerrard, and Frank Lampard has helped raise the profile of the league once again. This could be enough to convince Aquilani, who is set to be a free agent in the summer, into a move. The 30-year-old’s contract comes to an end this season but there have been no signs from Fiorentina that they would like to extend the deal.
The player’s agent has confirmed that his client remains unsure about his future in Florence. Aquilani has been a regular fixture in the Fiorentina line-up. Despite the team not performing to the heights of last season, they remain in the hunt for a top five finish.
This could see them return to the Europa league once again. The possibility of a Champions League finish may be beyond them since Roma, who occupy the final spot, are eight points ahead of them with eight games left in the campaign. If Fiorentina were interested in keeping the player, they would have begun contract talks along while ago. The player’s agent, Franco Zavaglia, says that no talks have begun as of now and his client remains in the dark over his future.
“There’s no news yet on the renewal of the midfielder. I don’t know how it will end, we’re waiting to see what Fiorentina want to do,” said Zavaglia. Despite featuring in more than 25 matches this season, Aquilani is yet to score a goal and he has assisted only once this season. This poor form appears to have convinced the Fiorentina to let the player leave on a free transfer.
